Jan Voit

Jan Voit, PT, obtained her graduate degree in Physical Therapy from Emory University in 1980. With more than 30 years of clinical experience, her geriatric specialization includes serving as the PT Clinical Specialist for the Fall Clinics and the Fall Prevention Specialist in the Outpatient PT Clinic at the University of Washington’s (UW) Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Jan has a wide breadth of experience with therapeutic exercises that are clinically relevant and applicable to older adults at risk of falling and with neurological impairments such as gait abnormalities, and balance disorders.

In 2011, Jan received her initial educational and technical training in the Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance® (TJQMBB) program with Fuzhong Li, Ph.D at the Oregon Research Institute (ORI). Since then, she has been extensively applying the therapeutic movement techniques in her clinical practice and community classes. Jan became an Authorized TJQMBB trainer in 2014 and has since conducted numerous workshops teaching and training hundreds of TJQMBB community instructors and healthcare professionals across the country.

Jan has also worked with Dr Li on his most recent TJQMBB research Effectiveness of a Therapeutic Tai Ji Quan Intervention vs a Multimodel Exercise Intervention to Prevent Falls Among Older Adults at High Risk of Falling: A Randomized Clinical Trial (2018, JAMA Internal Medicine) and Cost Effectiveness of a Therapeutic Tai Ji Quan Fall Prevention Intervention for Older Adults at High Risk of Falling (2019, Journal of Gerontology). Prior to that she worked with Dr Li in the field of Dissemination and Implementation of an Evidence Based Fall Prevention Program contributing to both a research study (2013) and a scholarly article (2016) published in the Journal of American Geriatric Society.

Since 2014, Jan has been giving various presentations and lectures on the clinical applications of TJQMBB at the UW and UPS Doctor of Physical Therapy programs annually, and at both PT and UW nursing conferences. Jan has also been actively involved in working with a variety of local organizations on translating research-based TJQMBB to community and clinical practice. She is a member of the Washington State Senior Fall Prevention Coalition helping to disseminate the TJQMBB program in Washington State.

Julie Cauthorn

Julie Cauthorn, DPT, received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Washington in 2013.  She also received Master’s degrees in Movement Therapy and Social Work from Hunter College in New York City, in 1989.  Currently she practices physical therapy at the University of Washington’s Valley Medical Center in Renton, WA, and teaches community-based Tai Ji Quan Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB) classes and fall prevention workshops on a regular basis.

In 2012 Julie received her initial TJQMBB training from Jan Voit, PT, and Fuzhong Li, Ph.D, and has been incorporating TJQMBB therapeutic movement techniques into her clinical practice since that time.  Julie is passionate about helping people improve their balance and physical and mental well-being through movement.  Julie is an authorized TJQMBB trainer and provides workshops and training for community instructors and healthcare professionals.

Julie supports program dissemination in various ways, including presenting at conferences and mentoring instructors in how to develop successful, sustainable community programs.  Julie was instrumental in establishing the first hospital based TJQMBB program in the state of Washington.
